Healthy Aging & Acupuncture: What Connecticut Medicare Patients Should Know

If you've been considering acupuncture to help with pain, mobility, stress, or overall wellness, one of your first questions may be:

"Will Medicare cover acupuncture?"

The answer can be a little confusing—and you're definitely not alone if you've found conflicting information online.

At our practice, we want to make insurance as easy to understand as possible. Here's what you need to know about Medicare coverage for acupuncture in Connecticut, why the rules exist, and how Medicare Advantage plans may offer different benefits than Federal Medicare.

A Brief History of Medicare and Acupuncture

For many years, Federal Medicare did not cover acupuncture at all. Acupuncture was considered an alternative therapy and was excluded from Medicare benefits.

In 2020, Medicare made an important change by adding limited coverage for acupuncture specifically for chronic low back pain. This was a significant step forward in recognizing acupuncture as a valuable treatment option.

However, Medicare's coverage came with very specific requirements about who is allowed to provide and bill for acupuncture services.

Why Many Connecticut Acupuncturists Cannot Bill Federal Medicare

This is one of the biggest points of confusion for patients.

In Connecticut, licensed acupuncturists complete extensive education and clinical training to become state-licensed healthcare professionals. Despite this, licensed acupuncturists are not recognized by Medicare as eligible Medicare providers.

That means that even though Medicare may cover acupuncture in certain situations, licensed acupuncturists generally cannot enroll as Medicare providers or submit claims directly to Medicare.

Instead, Medicare limits reimbursement to certain provider types who meet Medicare's billing requirements and provide acupuncture under Medicare's rules.

For this reason, our office does not participate with Federal Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans Are Different

Here's where things become more encouraging.

Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurance companies and often include benefits that go beyond Federal Medicare.

Depending on your specific plan, acupuncture may be covered for a wider range of conditions and may allow treatment by licensed acupuncturists.

Because every plan is different, benefits can vary based on:

  • Your insurance company

  • Your specific Medicare Advantage plan

  • Referral or authorization requirements

  • Visit limits

  • Medical necessity guidelines

  • Diagnosis - some Medicare Advantage plans still only cover for chronic low back pain, others cover for chronic pain in general

Our office participates with select Medicare Advantage plans, and we're happy to help determine whether your plan includes acupuncture benefits.

We Can Help Verify Your Coverage

Insurance can be complicated, especially when different Medicare plans have different rules.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan and you're unsure whether acupuncture is covered, our team can often help verify your benefits before your first appointment.

We'll explain:

  • Whether we're in-network with your plan

  • Any copays or coinsurance

  • Whether prior authorization is required

  • What your acupuncture benefits include

Our goal is to make the process as straightforward as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Federal Medicare cover acupuncture in Connecticut?

Federal Medicare offers limited acupuncture coverage under specific circumstances, but licensed acupuncturists are generally not recognized as Medicare providers for billing purposes. As a result, our office does not participate with Federal Medicare.

What if I have secondary Medicaid, or another supplement?

We unfortunately cannot bypass Medicare and submit to your secondary or supplement. If Federal Medicare is your primary insurer, we will have you pay our out-of-pocket rates.

Do you accept Medicare Advantage?

Yes. We participate with some Medicare Advantage plans. Coverage depends on your individual insurance plan, so we recommend contacting our office so we can help verify your benefits.

How do I know if my plan covers acupuncture?

The easiest option is to call our office with your insurance information. We'll help determine whether we're in-network with your Medicare Advantage plan and explain any benefits that may apply.
